First Lift
The 2013 Niagara District & Open Championships in Springville, NY at the Buffalo Barbell Club was my first Weightlifting meet. Seen here is attempt #1 in the Snatch event at 50kg/110#! It’s a lot of fun to watch old videos like this and see how my technique has evolved through much trial & error and countless repetitions.
I remember around this time I lacked a lot of confidence in the Snatch – especially catching the bar low. In training & competition I would frequently revert to Power Snatches and it took quite some time to break the habit. Some remedies that I have used for myself since this performance have involved:
1.) Paused Back Squats to gain comfort and strength in the bottom position.
2.) Sots Presses for balance, core strength, and shoulder stability.
3.) Angel Drops to teach myself to move my feet and pull myself under / through the barbell.
4.) Purchased weightlifting shoes – custom made from reebok that said “under” on the straps as a constant reminder.
It takes time and patience to learn about yourself as an athlete and I have enjoyed every step of the way in my journey through this sport.
